Dr Anthony Beresford graduated with a BA Honours degree in Geography from Manchester University in 1977. He was awarded his PhD in Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia in 1982 and published several academic papers based on his field research in East Africa. He is a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society and, by virtue of winning a prestigious Royal Society Research Scholarship in 1978, he is also a Scholar of the Royal Society.
Prior to his current post, he was Research Associate at the University of Birmingham working on winter road maintenance, studying, in particular, the prediction of ice-formation on roads. The project, which was originally funded by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (now the TRL), subsequently expanded into an industry-standard international road-safety system.
Anthony has travelled widely in an advisory capacity within the ports and transport fields in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. He co-authored Lloyd`s Maritime Atlas of World`s Ports and Shipping Places, 15th & 16th Editions (1986 &1989). The 1989 Edition formed the blueprint for all subsequent editions, and the Atlas is recognised as the Standard Work in its field; the 23rd Edition was published in 2005.
Anthony has published over 120 academic papers and reports; with many of his papers appearing in front-rank academic journals. His research is currently focused on:
- Multimodal transport systems

Anthony`s Cost Model for Multimodal Transport is widely quoted in academic journals and has now been adopted by UNESCAP as the standard approach to quantifying the cost- and time-competitiveness of international logistics corridors.
In the UK, Anthony has assisted the DETR (subsequently the DfT) in, for example, the production of the discussion paper: Recent Developments and Prospects at UK Container Ports published in July, 2001; he has acted as expert witness to the Public Enquiry into the proposed container terminal at Dibden Bay, Southampton, 2001-5; advised the Welsh Assembly on road transport policy options, 2004-5; and contributed to the Wales Freight Strategy Consultation Document 2006/2007.
