The Cardiff MPA is a part-time executive style programme delivered through intensive three day modules.
The programme was launched in 2006 to provide senior and middle managers in the Welsh public services with a generalist but firmly vocational post-graduate education in management. Over the five years of its operation, the MPA has established an excellent reputation in the market for providing high-level executive education. Former students have been appointed to very senior positions in the Welsh public services.
The part-time programme is designed to fit into the lives of working public service managers and be compatible with the needs of their employers. In stages one and two participants complete a total of six modules over two years of part-time study. Each module is delivered in two three day sessions of intensive teaching – approximately one session every other month – embracing a combination of lectures, small group exercises, case studies and expert speakers. On completion of the taught stages, participants go on in the third year to prepare project based dissertations with one to one supervision and support from expert faculty at the University.
Each of the six taught modules in stages 1 and 2 of the programme will be assessed through a 90 minute task-focused class test and a 3,000 word assignment. Stage 3 requires the submission of a 20,000 word project-based dissertation. The purpose of assessment throughout is to ensure that the learning outcomes for the programme as a whole, and for each module within it, are being attained.
