Research is a defining feature of Cardiff Business School, one of the leading UK academic institutions for the study of business and management. ABHRU has, as its overall objective, to contribute towards the School's mission to produce research of international standing.

The specific aims of ABHRU are: to publish world class research publications; to encourage research in accounting and business history; to provide a focal point for inter-disciplinary and international comparative research involving accounting and business history; to arrange conferences; and to provide business and accounting history inputs to courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

ABHRU has been successful in pursuing all its identified aims, since formation in 1989, and has achieved a reputation for international excellence in research. The Panel Feedback Report for the RAE 2001 described the 'outputs of the historical research group' as 'outstanding'.
