Research

Research is at the centre of Cardiff Business School’s activities. In the most recent UK Government Research Assessment Exercise, Cardiff was ranked 4th for the quality of its research, with 70% of research classified as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

The School has five Academic Sections: Accounting and Finance; Economics; Human Resource Management; Logistics and Operations Management; and Marketing and Strategy . Whilst research is primarily organised around these five Sections, the School also hosts a number of multidisciplinary research centres, bringing together expertise both across Sections and from a number of Academic Schools at Cardiff University and also specialist research units. A sense of this type of work is conveyed in the descriptions of the main research centres and units.

The School has a strong and active PhD programme, with 150 PhD students studying at the School at any one time. A substantial proportion of these students are funded by scholarships obtained from funding bodies including the ESRC, EPSRC and a number of private sector organizations. The breadth and depth of the School's research could not, however, rely solely on formal structures. Individual and small group research is highly regarded and supported by the School.

Cardiff’s research reputation has helped it become an attractive centre of scholarship for colleagues from the UK and beyond. Considerable resources are allocated each year to support the School’s research activity: these include individual research budgets for research-active staff, seedcorn funding to kickstart new research, an international visitor scheme to bring leading academics from high quality research institutions to the School, overseas travel fellowships to develop already-established links with academics in other countries, and funding for workshops and conferences including policy and practitioner workshops targeted at policymaker and practitioner audiences.
